Information on Giving to Katrina Survivors

A paranormal romance fan from Baton Rouge Louisiana sent a letter to various authors to put her plea out for other readers and writers to heed.  It is not in me to recommend something I have not tried personally, sorry, but when I say something is fantastic…that means I myself have experienced it, not someone else.

Every morning I get up and watch the news and cry over what I see; everyday I speak with someone who is finding it all too difficult to take – all the devastation, created by both man and nature.  Then I go to sleep listening to the news and how all the horrors have worsened through the day.

No more.  I am a strong believer that money is not always the answer to a problem or happiness, but today it almost seems to be the best solution to those suffering down in the Gulf Coast of North America.  Things like clothes, diapers and food are not going to be easy to find the people who really need it, my eternal optimism would like to think that donated money will make it easier to help now.

If this is the route you think is for you here is a list to donate money for relief efforts from a national news agency’s website [*=agencies I have happily dealt with before]:

America’s Second Harvest

American Red Cross

B'nai B'rith Disaster Relief Fund

Catholic Charities

Episcopal Relief & Development

Feed the Children*

Habitat for Humanity* [I also like to think of the future]

Humane Society of the United States*

ICNA Relief

Islamic Relief

Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals* [have not dealt with the Louisiana chapter in specific but the group in general]

National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster

Operation USA

Salvation Army*

The Network for Good

United Jewish Communities

United Methodist Committee on Relief

However, if giving money is not what you would like to do then join the club.  On the day I settled down to send money I was still left feeling helpless, then came an email offering the perfect means for me to really help.  A reviewer put out a call for books – they live in Houston where many of the most affected have been moved to shelters and thought they might need something to take their thoughts away if even for a few moments.  So up to the attic I went, pulled out three boxes and filled each with my most favorite reads – one for kids, one for tweens/teens and one for mom and dad and it felt wonderful.  I imagine it will be even better when they hit the post office on Tuesday – sending something tangible but also something loved was the perfect option for me.

So, do what you can, smile and be positive that all will be well for those experiencing these horribly uncertain times.
