A
sneak peek at something that inspired this tale...
There
are quite a few things that stimulated my mind in writing this story.
There’s the World Cup, Wimbledon, and the ongoing women's quest for
equal footing at the workplace.
Phrew,
an interesting stew to say the least, especially when you know the main
plot of the series is: women
striving for an existence that means something.
Yup, any kind of discrimination is a dirty aspect of reality and
yes it's still around today. This is a part of life that is rarely
pretty when put under the glare of the spotlight.
However, to put it in a romance without making either gender look
bad was a challenge I couldn’t pass up.
For such a serious endeavor, it has a rather benign beginning in my
fertile imagination.
There
I was, watching the World Cup [football/soccer] with my cutie and niece,
really enjoying the competition’s international appeal and thought about
doing a story with a Universal event as a part of it.
Feeling my creative juices flowing,
I watched the game and started to loosely plot "Zandia",
even wrote down a few notes so when I could focus on it the things I’d
thought of were still fresh.
Ahhh,
but life never works that easily for a writer.
Around this same time, the big cheeses at Wimbledon announced, for
the first time ever, the top men’s and women’s prizes would be the
same. I was stunned because I
hadn’t realized that they weren’t level.
There were a few vocal dissenters who claimed women didn’t have
to play as many games as the men, so it shouldn’t be the same.
Grrr! This brought
another couple of notes for the file, placed right in front of those from
the World Cup and once I read through them again, it all started to jell
together.
