Featured Author at Joyfully Reviewed [Oct/Nov 2007]

Have you always wanted to be a writer?  How did you get started writing?

Actually, I thought I’d be a fashion designer until I found out you had to sew.  However, if anyone asks my family what they thought I’d do, it was to write and illustrate children’s books.  Still might one day, although I’m enjoying the path I’ve stumbled upon.  As for how I got here, simple, I broke my hand.  Seriously, I was on the couch and couldn’t go out and about, and while online looking for something to read I found a call for Twisted Fairy Tales.  “Come, Sweet Creature” was being formulated in my mind before I finished reading the details for the second time.  I wrote, submitted, and it was accepted, what a thrill!

Tell us a little about what makes you…you.

Well, I guess you could say what makes me…me, started way back with my granola-like upbringing.  Along with a laid back way of life, health food, and the beach as a backyard, I was brought up to appreciate life and gladly meet all the twists and turns it brings with it, and I do so wholeheartedly.  Other than that, I haven’t a clue!

When writing…do you plan the book out before you begin or does the story develop page by page?

Honestly, it is a bit of both.  When it comes down to putting the first words on the page, I have it all planned out, where I want the story to go and how to get there.  That said, sometimes the characters will grow in another direction and I have to be flexible with my original idea.

It sounds like you have lived all over…do you have a place you enjoyed most?  Where do you call home?

Well, actually, I’ve “lived” in only 3 places - Southern California, Northern England, and East Coast, US.  Oh, and when I was really young we spent a year in Georgia :-).  That said, I’m lucky enough to travel far and wide, and love every minute.  Even the most difficult of places to visit I’ve enjoyed, and been greatly surprised to come out with my stomach intact!  Today, home is in the US, east coast [brrr], but emotionally home is wherever my cutie is.

Tell us some of your favorites…foods, books, authors, movies, television shows, music, colors, and any other favorites.

Books are my thing, all kinds - even books about books - in fact we have books in every room of our home, including hallways and on stairs.  I like Greek mythology, Kathleen E. Woodiwiss, Janet Evanovich - Stephanie Plum makes me laugh, children’s picture books, and playing with my pop-up books.  Another passion is criminal/legal type tv shows.  Law & Order - all of them, CSI, The Closer, and yes, Lock Up!  Then there is nothing like spending hours in a museum, finding new artists and enjoying old favorites like Rubens, Sargent, Sorolla, Whistler.  My taste in music is pretty diverse - The Eagles, Verve - Bittersweet Symphony is divine, Madness [now playing as The Dangermen], Marvin Gaye and Gnarls Barkley.  But, what brings me to my knees is my sweet tooth.  Everyone knows I have love for sugar.  Red vines to write and edit with, hot chocolate with mini-marshmallows for cold days, or hot, doesn’t matter really - on our kitchen counter, next to the cuties coffee thing, is a jar filled with marshmallows.  Mmm, simply lovely and just writing it puts a smile on my face :-).

You write in several genres…is there one you prefer and if so why?  Is there a genre you would like to try?

No, actually I don’t have a preference, they each feed a separate side of my imagination.  I’m a real fan of historical romances and would love to try my hand at one, although I’m not sure I will.  I never say never, but can say not right now.

I read you enjoy traveling…where is your favorite place to travel?  Where would you like to visit that you have not had a chance to?

Oh yes, I love visiting someplace new.  It’s the little things that make it special and ours.  Going to Paris and hunting for the best hot chocolate the city has to offer, attending a traditional Hindu wedding in India as the only westerners, catching a shore crasher on Oahu and realizing a giant turtle is riding it with us, or having to pay for toilet paper to enter a mixed restroom in Lisbon - it’s things like this that makes the visit uniquely ours.  I wouldn’t trade a moment of the trips I’ve made away for anything.  There aren’t any favorites because I’d go back to all of them if given the opportunity.  As for where I’d like to go if given the chance, I’d have to say Easter Island.  Everything I’ve read or seen about it is interesting.

Do you have a writing routine that you follow and what is it?

I never really thought about this until now, and apparently I do.  I have a general idea of the next story I want to write and mull it around, then delve in to the research.  Researching is one of my favorite parts of writing.  It can be anything from a specific job one of the characters holds to where it will be set, what they eat, sleep or some kinky new sex toy they try.  When I feel comfortable with everything I’ve collected, it’s all about the writing, everyday until the end.  I set it aside and start working on gathering information for the next story.  After a couple of weeks I come back to the first one, rework the areas I’ve been dwelling on, and finally write out the synopsis.  Then I print it out and take a red ink pen to it and keep doing this until I’m happy with it, then submit it.  The wait is the most difficult part and to help my nerves, I delve back in to the research of the next project or other things like paperwork.

What is a day in Tilly’s life like?

HA!  Only the most exciting of things happen here at home.  The alarm goes off early, usually around 5.  Once I make it downstairs I make the cutie a cup of tea and lunch, then answer emails before he comes downstairs.  Once he’s left I’m on the treadmill, after that I’m back on the computer trying to finish up emails.  Once all that’s settled, I’m focused writing or editing and nothing else - unless the family or friends phone.  At around four the cutie calls and says he’s heading home and that’s when the dash begins.  Was I supposed to cook something for dinner?  Do we have any food in the fridge or should I go to the market?  Did I do laundry and it’s been sitting in the washing machine all day?  Did I remember to shower after the treadmill?  I have about thirty-five to forty minutes to figure this out - pressure is on!  Thank goodness the cutie couldn’t give a flying flip how it turns out - it’s always a surprise :-).

Do you enjoy hearing from readers and what is the best way to contact you?

I love it!  They give me a big boost when I meet one in person or hear from them by email.  As long as I’m near a reliable internet source [and thank you for all those unsecured networks out there], I answer my email [tilly@ tillygreene .com minus the spaces of course].  There’s also my Hot Thoughts Blog [http://tillygreene.blogspot.com] where I share all sorts of things, from work to personal.  And, if they come out to one of the events I attend throughout the year, I’m all about sharing a shriek of happiness at seeing them.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?  What was an invaluable piece of advice that you received when you first started out?

I sure do - and it’s simple.  BIC!  Nothing will ever happen if you don’t follow the butt in chair rule.  Sit down and do it, because you’ll keep dreaming, be haunted by these voices, or wondering what if.  But that’s not all - once you’ve actually written down your story, you must do one more thing - SUBMIT!  You won’t ever know what’s possible unless you do these two things.  A dream is a wonderful thing and shout never be ignored.

Being a reader and writer of romance…do you believe that there is one perfect person out there for all of us?  And have you found yours?

Absolutely.  The prince charming thing was always there growing up, in books and movies.  Maybe it isn’t very logical, but, again, I think if we’re open to the idea, it will happen.  Before I moved abroad for school, I visited a tea leaf reader - I wanted to know how I’d do living abroad.  Kid you not, she said I’d meet my knight on a white charger.  Okay, I’m terrified of horses and the cutie doesn’t ride a horse, but he was the first person I met when I arrived at my accommodations.  I fell for him and never looked back.

How do you promote your work?

I enjoy the mini-book trailer thing, it lets a different side of my creative brain come out and play, so I’ve been trying my hand in this area.  There are always the more traditional ways, bookmarks, postcards, blogging and chats, but my favorite would have to be my Tilly Greene tote bags.  Each month I host a giveaway for the Monthly Scorcher members [yahoo http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tilly_greene/ or google http://groups.google.com/group/tillygreene] and giveaway any number of bags away full of goodies.  I try to remember to come back from an interesting location with something different for the next month’s bags.

If you could bring one of your characters to life…who would it be and why?

I love them all, they are like children to me, and hate to pick one out over the other.  But, if I must pick one, then today I think Sui Erom, from “Zandia”, would be an interesting woman to sit down with and have a chat.  She has a great deal of guts and determination to make her own way through life, then lust and love happen and throws everything she planned up in the air.  It’s always interesting to see how people handle the unexpected, and she handles it well.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

Well, I’m very excited right now because on the 22nd of October the second book in my A Passion for Fashion and Bondage series, Taming Marie Antoinette, will be released over on Phaze.  The world of fashion is very interesting and I’ve explored a couple of different areas.  The first book, “The Leather Bride”, is about a muse, this one has haute couture front and center, and I’m working on the third, “The Gilded Cage”, which will have a jeweler - the fourth is planned, but who knows what will call me next.

Thank you so much Gracie, for talking with me, I had a great time :-)
